The FIMS Graduate Library presents…  Wikimedia Commons Photo Challenge – July 2025 

It’s easy to take part! 

  • Capture the scenes of your summer adventures, or take part in one of our weekly photo challenges in July
  • Create a Wikimedia account and join the Dashboard to enter your photos in the challenge 
  • Join us for an upload-a-thon to openly share your photography with Wikimedia Commons 

Why participate? 

  • In sharing your images with Wikimedia Commons, you are actively supporting open access to images for reuse and to enhance Wikipedia articles 
  • Learn how to upload and describe images for Wikimedia Commons 
  • Prizes for most uploads + best quality (Peer-voting in early August) 

Need technical support? Join us for an Upload-a-thon Event

  • Stephen Spong (Copyright Officer, Western Libraries) will share information about copyright for images in Canada and the U.S.
  • Erin Bourgard (Acting Director, FIMS Graduate Library) will share tips on privacy and stripping identifying information from images
  • Emily Carrasco-Acosta (MLIS Candidate) will provide demonstrations in uploading images to Wikimedia and adding descriptions (metadata) to your images.
  • Hands-on help in uploading your images 

Snacks and refreshments will be served.

Week 1 Challenge: Local Landmarks Capture the places that define your community. Statues, bridges, buildings, or monuments. Think of what a visitor might find iconic or historically significant.

Week 2 Challenge: Nature in the City Showcase green spaces, urban wildlife, community gardens, or natural elements in your neighborhood. Parks, trees, rivers, or even a flower growing through the sidewalk!

Week 3 Challenge: Everyday Life Photograph scenes of daily life—markets, public transit, street vendors, or people at work (with permission). These images help illustrate Wikipedia articles about culture and society.

Week 4 Challenge: Public Art & Culture Capture murals, sculptures, performance spaces, or cultural festivals. Highlight how your community expresses creativity in public spaces.
